Llanthony – Hay-on-Wye

5 July 2025. Rain overnight but tent stayed dry. Up at 05:15 and away at 06:45. Not quite as clean as the campsite had no showers. Drizzly forecast for much of the day so will be wet anyway.

The first hour and a half was a 2km climb out of Llanthony 240 to 604m. Once on the ridge heading North-West, It was above the cloud base and very windy. No panoramic views from previous days until the descent into Hay-on-Wye. It wasn’t conducive to stopping on the ridge, so I didn’t stop for a break until well off the ridge at Hay Bluff.

One guy passed me on the way down. He was doing Offa’s Dyke, but was going about twice my speed as he only started from Chepstow Thursday afternoon.

Every other shop in Hay-on-Wye is a book shop. Signs everywhere indicating it is the bookshop capital. Saturday is also craft market day. Lots of tourists. At least I had avoided a weekend in May when the book festival is on!

Walking through Hay and crossing the bridge on the way up to Radnors End Campsite, I stopped for a cup of tea at the Treehouse cafe.

Got to Radnors End Campsite about 13:45. Steve is the owner and very helpful. Plenty of time to shower weand get clothes washed. 20km today. Walked back into town to get a few supplies and got a fish a chip takeaway for dinner back at the campsite.
