11 July 2025. Up at 04:45, away at 06:25. 31C forecast today.
The initial stretch into Llanmynech was along the banks of the old Montgomery Canal again for about 4 km. Signs indicate a dredging and restoration project is under way. It must be a big project as a couple of new bridges will be needed where they have filled in the canal to get the road across. No doubt it will eventually bring more tourists into the area.
The route from Llanmynech climbs around the disused limestone quarry across the golf course before descending into Nantmawr. Signs again for another restoration project of the Natmawr Valley Railway line. The second big climb (250m) provided excellent horizon views (Moelydd Hill). Took the opportunity to phone Roddy Park in Chester. He will join me for a day next Tuesday. Then a decent into Trefonen. Had a nice chat with the village shop owner who lives in Wrexham and has owned it for 5 days. She wondered what the hikers who passed were up to! I did find out that Joanne and her friend had been through a couple of hours earlier.
Arrived at the Old Mill campsite (£10) about a km North of Trefonen, near Candy, Oswestry, at 13:30 after 17 km. Neil and Siobhan provide a baked potato with filling as a food option, so I ordered that for 18:00. Got another clothes wash in. Lovely campsite with a camping shower and composting toilet.

Hi Richard,
Just to let you know that I have been enjoying your adventures, even though it is a few years now since we drank beers together and shared tramps (not what it sounds like you non-kiwis!). Not a part of the world I know much about, but it has caused me to read up on a bit of history and the exploits of King Offa!
Great to see you still treading the trails and living life to the full.
Cheers, Mike Moore
