Llangollen – Wernog Wood Campsite

13 July 2025. Up at 04:45, away 06:00.

On the way back to the track I took a 40 min detour to visit Dinas Bran Castle ruins which overlooks Llangollen. I left my pack at the bottom! A local guy who says he goes up daily said it was only operational for 16 years.

The walk goes up the side of a valley with crags one side and agriculture the other. Once at the head of the valley the route takes you across moorland and the down through Llandegla Forest; loads of mountain bikers. In Llandegla Village there is a very welcome community shop and cafe right on the tour. Obviously popular with Sunday cyclists as well as walkers.

The afternoon section was about 10 km. Up onto the Clwydian Hills and the first hill, Moel-y-plas.The Wernog Wood campsite has gate access from the trail. Claire welcomed me. They host arts and crafts workshops.

26 km today. Not as hot as yesterday, but much less woodland cover. Tomorrow I am meeting Roddy and old friend who lives nearby in Chester. He is going to walk the last two days with me.
