Kington – Knighton

7 July 2025. Up at 05:15. Away 07:00. Rain overnight. Apparently many people get confused between these they names. With only one letter difference, it’s easy to see why.

Rolling hills today. Even had a stretch of Offa’s Dyke mounds to walk along. Some with highly overgrown patches.

Stopped at the half way point for an early lunch snack at 11:00. Coming the other way was Ian and we had a long chat. He spent 6 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). Just as I was about to leave Joanne arrived. We walked together downhill but she was faster on the uphill. It was another day of three hills, about 200m of climb and descent on each. Unlike other towns Knighton wasn’t visible from the hills until you entered it. (15:30) Some nice stretches along Offa’s Dyke. Must be a different county as things aren’t as well maintained compared to Monmouthshire.

The Panpwnton Farm Campite is on the eastern edge of Knighton, so I picked up some things for an evening meal to save a trip back into town. The campsite (£12) is well equipped with a kettle and a microwave as well as good showers. It also has a coffee cart (open until 17:00) which does excellent ice creams, but I resisted and had a flat white and a panini. The coffee guy warned me about the steep climb out first thing tomorrow. It won’t be as long as Llanthony.

Dinner was a chickpea and bean can from the co-op with a house salad.

24 km today.

    Hi Richard.

Looks like you’ve escaped the Kiwi winter for the heatwaves in UK. Am wondering how long you’ll be there for? Are you hiking the Welsh border?

    Warm regards,

    1. Flying back 19 Aug. Offa’s Dyke approximates to the English-Welsh border.
