18 June 2022. The full English breakfast at 0730 set me up well for the day. 0815 departure from the Youth Hostel with Paul. This was a long day with the highest point on the Pennine Way, Cross Fell (893m) The initial steady climb from Dufton (200m) steepened up Green Fell. Once on Knock Old Man (794m) we kept the high ground passed the radars dome on Great Dun Fell, over Little Dun Fell to Cross Fell arriving 1215 for a 15 minute break. The wind was very strong making it too cold to hang around. Good views though.
From the top it was a gradual descent on a track for about 10 km into Garrigill at 1515. The track, known as Corpse Track, is not popular amongst the walkers due to the monotony and the long horizon. The feet needed a 30 min break, before walking up the valley beside the River Tyne to Alston, arriving 1740. In all, 22 km with about 900m of climb. After tents pitched at the caravan park (£5) and showered, Paul and I went to the Alston Hotel bar for a pub meal and also met Steve again who was staying there.
